Craig Biggio
was born on December 14, 1965, in Smithtown, New York. He
was a multi-sport star at Kings Park High School, garnering
attention in baseball and football. Biggio had the
opportunity to play college football, but his true love lay
with baseball and he decided to attend Seton Hall
University. Biggio had an All-American career at Seton Hall,
and the Houston Astros were impressed enough to select him
with the 22nd overall pick of the 1987 MLB Draft.
It did not
take long for Biggio to make his major league debut. He
appeared in 50 games with the Astros in 1988, and became a
starter in 1989. At this point in his career, Biggio was a
catcher; however, he would move between catcher, second
base, and outfield over his long career. The bulk of
Biggio’s time was spent at second base and he proved to be a
very good defensive second baseman, winning four straight NL
Gold Gloves from 1994 to 1997. Biggio was also a consistent
player, hardly missing any time due to injury over his
career and posting solid numbers nearly every season.
Biggio
announced in July of 2007 that the 2007 baseball season
would be his last; he spent his entire 20-year career with
the Astros. He ended his career a member of the 3,000 hit
club, a seven-time All-Star, a four-time Gold Glover, and a
five-time Silver Slugger. His career totals include a .281
batting average, 3,060 hits, 291 home runs, 1,175 RBIs,
1,844 runs scored, 668 doubles, and 414 stolen bases.
